I’ve been making my own bread ever since I stumbled upon Suzanne McMinn’s Grandmother Bread. I always make a double batch, but I rarely make two loaves. Instead, I make one loaf, pizza crust, and cinnamon or chocolate bites.
I follow the recipe for Grandmother Bread. After it’s allowed to rise for an hour, I spread out the dough on a buttered cookie sheet to make the pizza crust. I have that baking while I make my cinnamon or chocolate bites (recipe forthcoming).
one stick of butter
I pull off little pieces of dough, roll them in cinnamon sugar, and place them in a buttered casserole dish. While I’m doing this, I have a stick of butter melting in a pan on the stove. Once the casserole dish is filled with a layer of these little dough bites, I sprinkle about a 1/4 to a 1/3 cup more of the cinnamon sugar on them. Then I pour the melted butter on top and pop the casserole dish into the oven. I bake them for probably 15 minutes or until they look like they’re done. I put the rest of the dough in a well buttered glass bread pan.
Once the pizza crust is pretty much baked (pulling away from the sides), I put our favorite pizza toppings on the crust and bake about 5 to 10 more minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted. Once the pizza is out of the oven, I put bread loaf in the oven and bake (following Suzanne’s recipe).
I really like being able to make three things from the same batch. It saves time and clean up, which I’m always up for!
