Angie Lilly from Foto Macro Artisan Interview & Giveaway
Posted on | February 6, 2012 | 31 Comments
Today’s interview is with Angie Lilly of Foto Macro on Etsy. As you’ll see, her photos really stand out due to how up close she gets to nature. She celebrates the “nitty-gritty details of the natural world” and invites us to celebrate with her!
Angie also sent me one of her beautiful photographs, similar to the Frosty Black Berry pictured below. I’d take a picture of it, but as you all know, my photography skills leave a lot to be desired – lol! Suffice it to say, that even her photographs of her photographs don’t do them justice. To see and hold the beauty of her photos in your hands can’t be totally captured in something that isn’t in person and seeing with your own eyes. If we could all photograph like Angie for our blogs, we’d be winning photography awards left and right for our photos!

Tell us about your store. What kind of items do you offer?
I offer prints of my macro photography, most of which are nature based in theme. All my prints are available in either standard 8×10 for $19.00 or 11×14 for $29.00; however, I also offer a variety of other sizes of my prints (i.e. 5×7, 8×10, 8×12, 11×14, 12×18, 8×8, 12×12, 16×20, 20×30, etc.). If you want a size other than what I generally offer, contact me and we will work it out! All prints come on Fujicolor Crystal Archive photographic paper, which will last a lifetime if stored properly. They are also available in either glossy or luster finish; however, I highly recommend the glossy finish for my photos.
How long have you had an interest in photography?
I have always had a photographer’s eye and been attracted to photography as an art form, but not until 2008 did I get a camera that allowed me to make my art a reality and my passion come through.
How did you get started? Did you start by experimenting around, or did you take a class and go from there?
I am self taught. I have not taken any photography classes. It’s just been a three year journey of discovery really. I enjoy tromping through my yard, local parks, city streets, etc. and finding the hidden beauty around me by getting down on its level, even if that means getting on my belly in the grass! For years I would see the intricacies of nature and wish I could capture it forever and that is what I really am trying to accomplish with my work.

Are there any particular mediums you like working with?
I am a huge flower fan. I love to peek inside flowers, especially wild flowers and weeds. I love to show people that what we think of as nuisance plants are actually just as beautiful as plants we buy for show. I also have an obsession with mushrooms and moss/lichens. They fascinate me as they feed off of decay and yet are so gorgeous and intricate in their own right.
Is there anything you eventually want to get in to and master?
I would love to be able to really get some good shots of animals and birds. Because they move, they are so hard to take macro shots of. I practice on my cats and the wild birds that visit my backyard, but I am still a novice with moving targets.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to read and watch vampire/paranormal/supernatural books/TV shows/movies. I cherish the moments I spend with my life partner, Scott, of over 22 years and my 7 fur babies (house cats). I enjoy meeting friends for meals out or coffee, especially at my favorite
Indian restaurant!
What’s a question you wish I would’ve asked? And please answer that
question. ![]()
What make/model of camera do you use (because I get asked this all the time! LOL)? I currently use a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS that I purchased in March of 2011. Prior to that, I used a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS.

Please include ten fun facts about yourself.
1) My partner calls me Garfield because I love cats, am like a cat in many ways, and one of my favorite foods is lasagna LOL I call him my Pooky Bear, since that is Garfield’s favorite snuggle toy.
2) I met my partner when I was a junior in high school at age 16 and he is the only serious relationship I have ever had.
3) I love to have fun with my hair and have had many fun styles like Mohawks and buzz cuts and colors like hot pink and flame red!
4) I am a huge cat person and have had as many as 12 house cats at one time. I currently have 7.
5) I have been a vegetarian for almost 12 years.
6) I am addicted to fun pajama sets. My favorite pair currently has owls all over the flannel pants. I also have a pair with cupcakes and love them too.
7) I abhor talking on the phone and don’t do it unless I have no choice.
8 ) I am allergic to bell peppers, kiwi, and canned pineapple.
9) I love all kinds of fudge, especially pumpkin.
10) I am addicted to bath and body products/soy candles and tend to hoard them. I currently have my whole linen closet full (no room for towels) plus some boxes in my guest room.

Hi, Angie! Thanks for offering one of your photos for a giveaway. I like your shriveled virginia creeper berries photo best. The shape of the berry bunch reminds me of a very modern light fixture, but it’s so earthy and natural. That contrast is interesting.

Fascinating interview! I love looking at macro photography, as she says “the nitty gritty” of the plants. Each and every photo is spectacular but I was instantly drawn to the bee on the sunflower. Off to share this now.
